THE OHIO BARN PROJECT
In September, 2012, I was inspired to begin this project, which evolved over the years, ending with at least one painting of an old barn in each of Ohio's 88 counties. Though it involved a lot of traveling, both in sunshine, rain, and snow, the adventure helped me to meet many incredible people - not only barn owners and barn scouts but also historians, who devote their time and energy to preserving Americana. Ohio's old barns, once plentiful, have now outlived their usefulness and often aren't much more than money pits. I will continue to capture them on canvas as long as I can.
Many of my paintings are framed in the barn’s own wood, which adds to the charm of these historical paintings. And, each one comes with an essay, some more elaborate than others. Let’s face it: details of old barns weren’t kept well, unless the farm and barn passed down from one generation to the next. Most of the paintings are featured in fundraisers for the 4-H, county historical societies, or other non-profit organizations. They are arranged by county and the first barn in each will represent that county in an all-Ohio exhibit planned for May, 2021.
The texture of the thick impasto oil paint may show up on some of the photos, but not all. As all artists know, photographs don’t capture the true spirit of most objects. Hence, my impasto paintings usually look better "in person" than in a photo. When they're hung in natural light, due to the impasto thickness of the paint, they change appearance throughout the day. When held outside in sunlight, they dance.
Are they for sale? Most of my paintings raise funds for non-profits, including the 4-H, historical societies, Habitat for Humanity, the Humane Society, and others. If your non-profit is located in an Ohio county, let me know if your group is interested in such a fundraiser. Smaller unframed versions of some of these paintings are available on www.robertkroeger.com. Check the events page on that site for current fundraisers. Due to space limitations on this page, I've had to eliminate some of the essays and paintings, which have been sold over the last several years. If your barn painting's essay is not on this page, let me know and I'll forward it to you.
